Commonwealth Fusion Systems Raises Another $1B, Bringing Its Total to $4B

Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS), the world’s best-funded fusion startup, announced on July 30, 2026, that it has raised another $1 billion in equity financing.

The round lifts the company’s total funding to $4 billion since its 2018 founding, as CFS accelerates development and construction work toward commercial fusion power.

Pension Funds and Sovereign Wealth Funds Join the Round

According to the announcement, the new funding drew pension funds, sovereign wealth funds, and infrastructure and industrial corporate partners. CFS declined to name specific investors when asked by TechCrunch. The round is its largest since the $1.8 billion raised in 2021; a 2025 round added $863 million and, according to TechCrunch, included Nvidia, Google, and Khosla Ventures.

The company says the $4 billion total represents roughly 30% of all capital the fusion industry has raised; the new funds will go toward commercialization, completing SPARC’s assembly, and advancing the ARC plant.

SPARC’s 2027 Breakeven Target and ARC’s Virginia Development

CFS pursues magnetic confinement fusion, using powerful magnetic fields to confine plasma and keep it hot and dense enough for fusion reactions. SPARC is designed to demonstrate net energy gain from fusion reactions, while ARC, the commercial plant, is planned to convert fusion heat into electricity via a steam turbine.

SPARC, the demonstration reactor, is in final assembly at the company’s Devens, Massachusetts headquarters, and Canary Media reports it is roughly 80% complete. According to TechCrunch, CFS expects SPARC to achieve scientific breakeven in 2027 — the point at which fusion energy output exceeds the external heating energy delivered to the plasma, not the facility’s total power consumption. The National Ignition Facility (NIF) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is the only facility to have publicly achieved it.

ARC, the commercial plant, is under development in Chesterfield County, Virginia, targeting grid power in the early 2030s. Google and Italian energy group Eni, both CFS investors, have signed power purchase agreements covering more than half of ARC’s output, the company said. CEO Bob Mumgaard said CFS will put commercial fusion on the grid in the 2030s.

A Former Moderna CFO Fuels IPO Speculation

TechCrunch reported that CFS named Lorence Kim, Moderna’s former CFO, as its new chief financial officer in late July. Kim joined Moderna in 2014 and helped take the biotech public in December 2018. Weighing Kim’s background, progress on SPARC and ARC, and conversations with industry sources, TechCrunch suggested CFS could go public within two to three years — the outlet’s own analysis rather than a company announcement. A CFS spokesperson told TechCrunch that Kim himself has said his arrival does not necessarily mean IPO preparations are underway.

Fusion investment is accelerating worldwide: a bipartisan commission supported by the nonprofit Special Competitive Studies Project (SCSP) estimates that China has invested at least $6.5 billion in fusion commercialization since NIF achieved fusion ignition in late 2022, with some estimates topping $10 billion. Tomorrow Access recently covered Thea Energy’s $100 million Series B, another sign of investor appetite as surging power demand from AI data centers increases technology companies’ interest in fusion power.

What to Watch Next

Commonwealth Fusion Systems has not disclosed the investors in the new funding round, the construction costs of SPARC or ARC, or any listing plans. The next milestones are completing and starting up SPARC, followed by the company’s attempt to achieve scientific breakeven in 2027. Another point to watch is how its capital strategy evolves under the new CFO.
