Meta Launches Plus Subscriptions Globally, Tests AI Plans Regionally

Meta is rolling out paid subscriptions globally for Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp.

At the center of the announcement is the ‘Plus’ tier for consumers. Alongside it, Meta is also testing new paid plans for AI users, creators, and businesses in select markets.

Three Plus Plans Going Global

The consumer ‘Plus’ plans are priced at $3.99 per month for Instagram Plus and Facebook Plus, and $2.99 per month for WhatsApp Plus.

Subscribers gain features beyond what free users get — such as profile customization, special reactions, and Story analytics.

On Instagram, for example, subscribers can see how many people rewatched a Story and keep Stories visible beyond 24 hours. Facebook and Instagram lean toward expression and analytics, while WhatsApp focuses on personalization.

The new Plus plans do not replace Meta Verified, which is focused on identity verification and impersonation protection. Meta Verified remains a separate service for now.

Broadening Revenue Beyond Advertising

Advertising has long been Meta’s main source of revenue. The subscription expansion is an effort to grow revenue beyond ads.

The backdrop is heavy spending on AI and data centers. According to Meta’s first-quarter 2026 earnings disclosure, the company expects 2026 capital expenditures of $125 billion to $145 billion, including principal payments on finance leases.

Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp are already used worldwide, leaving limited room to grow user numbers. Generating additional revenue from billions of existing users beyond advertising has become important.

AI, Creator, and Business Plans Remain in Test Phase

AI and business paid plans are also being tested. However, these are not yet a global rollout but a regional check on demand.

For heavy Meta AI users, a paid plan is being prepared. Meta AI itself is already available to general users in select markets, but the paid plan is for those who want more image and video generation or more compute-heavy tasks.

For creators and businesses, Meta is testing paid plans that help with post analytics and visibility — making posts easier to discover and providing deeper engagement data.

In other words, alongside the consumer Plus plans, Meta is moving to widen its paid customer base to heavy Meta AI users, creators looking to grow their reach, and businesses looking to acquire customers.

What to Watch Next

The focus going forward is how far the test plans for AI, creators, and businesses will move toward a full rollout.

The giant platform that has long relied on advertising is moving toward a revenue model that combines subscriptions with paid AI services. This announcement is one step in that direction.
