Apple's Rebuilt Siri AI Arrives in the iOS 27 Beta, Years in the Making

Apple’s long-promised Siri overhaul is finally in users’ hands. The new Siri AI became available to public beta testers on July 13, 2026, when Apple released the iOS 27 public beta.

The assistant now understands personal context and holds natural conversations, delivering the product Apple has been promising for years.

It arrives, however, in an industry that has moved on to AI agents.

What the New Siri AI Can Actually Do

Apple introduced Siri AI at WWDC 2026 on June 8. Users can hold natural conversations by voice or text, and a dedicated Siri app arrives for the first time, with past conversations syncing across Apple devices via iCloud.

The core upgrade is personal context. Siri can search across photos, emails, contacts, messages, and calendar entries — surfacing a restaurant recommendation from a message, or a hotel confirmation number from an old email.

Siri also handles app actions — directions, music, photo edits, email drafts — and can answer questions via the camera view. Voice-expressivity controls are limited to higher-end devices that support Apple’s most powerful on-device model.

Reports point to a September general release for iOS 27, with Siri AI initially shipping as a beta even then.

An Assistant Built With Google’s Gemini — but Not Gemini Itself

The rebuild rests on Apple’s collaboration with Google. In a January 2026 joint statement, the companies said the next generation of Apple Foundation Models will be based on Google’s Gemini models and cloud technology, running on-device and on Private Cloud Compute servers.

According to TechCrunch, Apple distilled Gemini’s capabilities into smaller on-device models rather than shipping Gemini itself.

Apple says personal data handled through Private Cloud Compute is neither stored nor accessible to Apple. We covered the original announcement in our WWDC 2026 article.

Siri AI launches in English first, with support for more languages promised; Apple has not announced when Japanese support will arrive. It is initially unavailable in the EU on iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS, and in China pending regulatory work.

A Fixed Siri Meets the Agent Era

TechCrunch describes the launch as anticlimactic. During Apple’s years of delays, the AI industry moved from chatbots to agents that write code and complete multi-step tasks. Simply being a capable assistant is no longer a breakthrough.

Still, an assistant deeply integrated into the phone’s operating system, with personal context, is hard for standalone chatbot apps to replicate. The real test comes after the general release, when users who never install betas encounter the new Siri in daily use.

What to Watch Next

Apple has yet to announce an exact iOS 27 release date, and Siri AI will remain in beta at first.

The timing and scope of language support beyond English also remain unannounced, while launch timelines for the EU and China remain unclear.
