Okta to Acquire Permiso, Reportedly for Just Under $200M
July 30, 2026

On July 30, 2026, Okta announced that it had signed a definitive agreement to acquire Permiso Security, an AI identity security startup whose cloud-native platform monitors threats across human, machine, and AI-agent identities.
The companies did not announce a purchase price. TechCrunch, citing a person familiar with the transaction, reported that the deal was valued at slightly below $200 million and that the consideration would be almost entirely cash.
The acquisition strengthens Okta’s identity threat detection and response capabilities for AI agents and other machine identities.
A Deal Reported at Just Under $200 Million
Okta expects the transaction to close in the third quarter of its fiscal 2027, pending customary closing conditions. When asked about the reported valuation, an Okta representative did not reject the figure but declined to discuss the terms, TechCrunch reported.
TechCrunch also reported that Permiso has raised roughly $29 million to date, including an $18.5 million Series A led by Altimeter Capital in April 2024. That financing reportedly valued the Palo Alto-based startup at approximately $80 million post-money.
What Permiso Built: Monitoring Identity Risk and Runtime Behavior
According to Okta’s announcement, the platform draws on more than 2,500 signals across 70-plus identity partners to flag overprivileged access, unused permissions, anomalous agent behavior, and policy violations in real time across multi-cloud environments.
Dutch tech outlet Techzine reports that the product is built around a “Universal Identity Graph” mapping identities to their actions across clouds. According to Okta, insights from Permiso’s threat research team, P0 Labs, will expand Okta’s research capabilities and complement Okta Threat Intelligence. Permiso also offers SandyClaw, which analyzes AI agent skills in a sandbox to catch malicious behavior before deployment.
TechCrunch reported that Permiso emerged from stealth in 2022 and was co-founded by a team including former FireEye executives Paul Nguyen and Jason Martin. It specializes in detecting attacks that use stolen identities to move through cloud infrastructure.
Identity Security Moves Beyond Authentication
The acquisition reflects a broader shift in the identity market: identity management has long centered on authentication, authorization, and access rights, but as attacks abusing stolen legitimate credentials mount, vendors are racing to also monitor what users, applications, and AI agents do after gaining authorized access. Okta cited research showing that 58% of executives reported an AI-related security incident or near miss in the past year. Chief product officer Ely Kahn said Permiso will extend Okta’s identity security fabric with proven threat detection and response capabilities.
Security vendors are converging on AI from multiple directions — Tomorrow Access recently covered Microsoft’s first cyber model, MAI-Cyber-1-Flash. As enterprises deploy AI agents at scale, the identities that need protecting increasingly belong to machines rather than people.
What to Watch Next
The reported price has not been officially confirmed, and the deal must still clear closing conditions before its expected completion in the third quarter of Okta’s fiscal 2027. Okta has not yet detailed how Permiso’s capabilities will be integrated into its platform; those specifics may emerge closer to or after the closing.
