Wing and Walmart Expand Drone Delivery to Seven New US Metro Areas

Alphabet-owned Wing is adding seven US metro areas to its Walmart drone delivery network, extending the service to nearly 20 markets nationwide.

The expansion reflects a broader bet by Wing and Walmart that drone delivery can move from a limited experiment to a repeat-use retail delivery channel.

The Seven New Markets and the Plan Through 2027

Wing, the Alphabet-owned company that delivers groceries and other goods by autonomous drone, is adding seven US metro areas to its Walmart partnership: Memphis, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Diego, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Salt Lake City.

The expansion brings the partnership to nearly 20 US markets. Wing already serves Walmart customers in Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth, and the Houston area, and has named Orlando, Tampa, Charlotte, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Los Angeles, and Miami as future markets.

According to the companies, they aim to operate from more than 270 stores by 2027, reaching over 40 million Americans. The companies say orders can arrive in as fast as 30 minutes, with items lowered to a customer’s yard or driveway on a tether.

How Walmart Scaled Its Commitment to 270-Plus Stores

Walmart has tested drone delivery for years, but it expanded the program after early success with Wing in markets such as Atlanta and Dallas-Fort Worth.

In January 2026, the two companies announced plans to bring on-demand drone delivery to an additional 150 Walmart stores, and the latest seven-market expansion continues that push. Usage has climbed alongside the buildout.

In May 2026, Walmart said it had surpassed one million drone deliveries across its partners, including Wing and Zipline, with about 40% of them completed in the first quarter of its 2027 fiscal year.

Wing’s chief business officer, Heather Rivera, said in January that the top 25% of customers use the service three times a week, a sign that for some households drone delivery has become routine.

Whether Drone Delivery Outgrows the Novelty Label

What matters in this announcement is that drone delivery is shifting from a one-time novelty toward a service customers use regularly, based on repeat-usage data.

“Our work with Walmart has shown that drone delivery isn’t just a novelty, it’s a service many customers count on multiple times per week,” Rivera said in a statement on the new markets. Still, for the newly added markets, the specific stores and launch timing are left to future announcements.

Wing and Walmart say they work with local leaders and residents before launching in each city, and reports say Wing aims to begin operations in the new markets by 2027. Whether the partnership builds a genuinely nationwide network depends on how quickly it can move through those local rollouts.

What to Watch Next

The key questions are which stores and neighborhoods the new markets will start from, and how far the network can expand by 2027. Against the goal of more than 270 stores and 40 million residents, the pace of local rollout in each market will determine how fast the network grows.
