Less than a year after its release, the project has passed 380,000 stars on GitHub (as of August 2026).

Another well-known example of AI that acts on your instructions is Claude Code, offered by U.S. AI company Anthropic. So what exactly separates the two?

This article compares their relationship and differences — what each can do, how much they cost, and how they differ on safety — using side-by-side tables.

Same Kind of Agent, Different Design Philosophy

The project that became OpenClaw began in November 2025, when an Austrian developer released an open-source personal AI agent as a personal project. It launched under the name “Clawd,” and the rename to OpenClaw was announced on January 29, 2026. It is free to use under the MIT License and is known for its lobster mascot.

In July 2026, the project announced the OpenClaw Foundation, a U.S. 501(c)(3) nonprofit that stewards the project.

The key point is that OpenClaw is not the “brain” itself. It is a framework for receiving instructions and carrying them out, and users choose which AI model to connect as the brain — Anthropic’s Claude, models from other vendors, or local models.

That is why it is sometimes described overseas as “Claude with hands.” The Australian gym incident, too, reportedly involved OpenClaw running a Claude model. For details, see our article on the Australian gym incident.

Claude Code, on the other hand, is a development-focused AI agent offered by Anthropic, the company that builds Claude itself. It reads your codebase and automates work such as editing files, running commands, and writing tests.

In short, choosing Claude inside OpenClaw means using Claude through a different agent framework. The larger difference is that OpenClaw is designed as a general-purpose personal AI agent, while Claude Code is Anthropic’s official product, built outward from the development workflow.

Eight Differences at a Glance

The main differences are summarized below.

Item

OpenClaw

Claude Code

Provider

OpenClaw Foundation / open-source community

Anthropic (official product)

Character

Always-on “personal assistant”

On-demand “developer tool”

Main uses

Everyday tasks: email, bookings, research

Development: code analysis, fixes, tests, pull requests

Main entry points

Messaging apps such as Telegram

Terminal, IDE, desktop, web, Slack

Recurring runs

Automations (cron), plus Heartbeat (every 30 minutes by default; hourly with Anthropic OAuth)

Routines (scheduled cloud runs) and others

AI model

Many providers (Claude, other vendors, local)

Claude

Extensions

ClawHub skills (including third-party; automated security checks and verification at publish)

Skills (official, your own, and plugins) and MCP (a common standard for tool integrations)

Software cost

Free (MIT License)

Paid plans or API billing

Recurring execution used to be a major dividing line, but Claude Code now officially offers Routines (scheduled runs in the cloud, in research preview) and Slack integration. On the OpenClaw side, recurring jobs at set times are handled by automations (cron), while Heartbeat periodically checks in within the session. Even so, the two differ in center of gravity: OpenClaw is designed as a live-in assistant for everyday life, running continuously on your own computer or server, while Claude Code has grown outward from the development workflow.

Which Tool for Which Job?

Typical tasks break down as follows.

What you want to do

Better fit

Why

Fix bugs and refactor code

Claude Code

Multi-file edits informed by your whole codebase

Create pull requests, work as a team

Claude Code

Official GitHub integration and code review

Sort email and gather news every morning

OpenClaw

Runs continuously and takes orders from a messaging app

Delegate bookings and price negotiations

OpenClaw

A published case saved $4,200 on a car purchase

Choose your own AI model

OpenClaw

Supports many providers, including local models

Use official vendor support

Claude Code

Distributed and supported by Anthropic

The car-negotiation case was published by U.S. developer AJ Stuyvenberg on his blog. He notes, however, that he configured the agent to check with him before consequential replies and took over the final contract steps himself. It was not a case of handing everything over to the agent.

Cost: “Free Software” vs. Subscription

OpenClaw’s software is free. What you pay on top of that depends on where you run it and on which AI model you connect and how you authenticate to it. Running it on your own computer does not require a separate server fee; running it around the clock on a VPS or another rented server adds that server’s cost.

Model costs are not limited to API billing either. The official documentation describes reusing a supported provider’s subscription login, and a local model makes an API-billing-free setup possible, though it requires a reasonably powerful machine.

Claude Code is used with Anthropic’s paid plans. According to the official page, the individual Pro plan starts at $17 per month (billed annually), the higher-usage Max plans cost $100 or $200 per month, and standard API billing is also available.

The two manage cost in opposite ways. With OpenClaw, you handle billing and authentication for each provider yourself. Claude Code runs within a flat-rate plan’s usage limits, and once you hit them, enabling usage credits lets you keep going at API rates.

Safety: the Lessons of the Gym Incident

Safety is where the two tools’ characters diverge most clearly.

With OpenClaw, everything from setup to operation is your own responsibility. Security firm Koi Security reports identifying 824 malicious skills in an audit of shared skills as of its February 16, 2026 update, up from 341 in the original February 1 report.

Security firm SecurityScorecard, in February 2026 research, reported more than 40,000 OpenClaw instances exposed to the internet, along with problems such as weak or missing authentication controls. In current OpenClaw releases, the Gateway binds to loopback by default, and binding beyond loopback without authentication is blocked.

Claude Code ships with official permission controls that gate file edits and command execution. Where the check actually happens, however, depends on the permission mode and on how you run it.

Claude Code has several permission modes, and on Pro, Max, and Team plans in some environments, such as the CLI and the VS Code extension, auto mode is the built-in starting mode. In auto mode, a separate classifier model reviews actions instead of prompting you for each one.

Routines, which run autonomously in the cloud, have no approval prompts during a run either, and tools from the connectors you include are available without approval, writes included. Granting overly broad permissions can lead to unintended actions with either tool.

The lessons of the gym incident apply regardless of the tool: keep permissions to the minimum necessary, and put a human check before irreversible operations. Both come down to how the user designs the setup.

<p class="has-large-font-size
