Opting out does not stop Twitch from using content for other AI and machine learning purposes such as automated captions. Twitch also says some AI features that protect platform-wide safety and security do not have individual settings, because turning them off for one person would weaken protection for everyone else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The toggle sits in channel settings under the security and privacy tab, labeled &#8220;Training for Generative AI.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><br><strong>&#8220;If This Was Opt-In, Nobody Would Opt In&#8221;: How Twitch Explained the Decision<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">According to TechCrunch, Twitch addressed the change in a livestream on its official channel in front of nearly 3,000 viewers, many of them posting anti-AI messages in chat. Head of Community Mary Kish and Chief Product Officer Mike Minton fielded the questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Asked why the program is not opt-in, Minton said: &#8220;If this was opt-in, nobody would opt in. That&#8217;s honestly the answer.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Minton also said he did not know whether Amazon has already trained models on Twitch content, telling one viewer he was not aware of what Amazon has used in its model training so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><br><strong>The Race for Training Data and the Choices Left to Creators<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Hours-long livestreams make Twitch a rich source of audio and video for AI training, and Amazon has been expanding its generative AI investments across the board \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/tomorrowaccess.com\/en\/news\/20666\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">it has even weighed selling its Trainium AI chips externally<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">For creators who stream publicly to earn income, however, a default-on setting carries the risk of contributing content without realizing it. Kish said that offering an opt-out at all reflects the community&#8217;s opposition to generative AI training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><br><strong>What to Watch Next<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">It remains unclear to what extent past Twitch content has actually been used to train Amazon&#8217;s models. Minton said on the stream that he does not know what Amazon has and has not used. At an event hosted by The Information in 2024, however, Minton \u2014 then Twitch&#8217;s chief monetization officer \u2014 said Amazon was using Twitch content for AI model training in a prototyping capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Twitch has reportedly explained that opting out also removes previously collected content from future generative AI training. How data already used in any trained models would be handled has not been made clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Whether the backlash prompts Twitch to adjust the
