AI developer Anthropic is reportedly on track to post its first quarterly operating profit, according to a May 20, 2026 report by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ).

Citing figures the company shared with investors, the WSJ says second-quarter revenue is expected to reach about $10.9 billion, more than double the $4.8 billion in the prior quarter. With generative AI carrying enormous compute costs, the timing of each lab’s path to profit has drawn close attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n


What the $559 Million Operating-Income Figure Means<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The profit metric cited in the reporting comes with an important caveat. The roughly $559 million figure includes model-training costs while excluding stock-based compensation. Because that metric strips out stock-based compensation, it is not directly comparable to GAAP operating income, and is best not read as the equivalent of an accounting profit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the revenue side, the increase from the first quarter to the second works out to roughly 130%. Rapid revenue growth and improving profitability arriving together marks a notable milestone in the path to monetizing generative AI. Even so, the outlook points only to a profit for a single quarter, with no assurance of a full-year profit. Reports note that further investment in compute infrastructure could push the full year back into the red.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These figures were said to be shared with investors as part of an ongoing funding round, and Anthropic declined to comment. It is worth keeping in mind that this is reporting rather than an official company disclosure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Sharp Shift From Earlier Investor Projections<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reported numbers mark a sharp shift from projections Anthropic shared with investors last summer, which indicated it did not expect a full-year profit until at least 2028.

Reports point to improving compute efficiency as a key reason. According to PYMNTS and others, the compute cost per dollar of revenue is expected to fall from 71 cents in the first quarter to 56 cents in the second.

Profitability in generative AI hinges on the cost of computing resources, which grows as model usage increases. When that cost per dollar of revenue falls, the same revenue yields more profit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Numbers Surface Alongside OpenAI IPO Reports<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reports appeared the same day as word that rival OpenAI is preparing to confidentially file paperwork for an initial public offering (IPO). According to the coverage, if the profit outlook proves accurate, it could put Anthropic in a stronger position against its biggest competitor, OpenAI, and the ongoing funding round could push Anthropic’s valuation to approach or potentially surpass OpenAI’s. Anthropic’s revenue growth is also described as faster than Google, Facebook, or Zoom at comparable stages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the past year, Anthropic has broadened support for its Claude chatbot among professionals and expanded its customer base with a new service for small businesses and tools for law firms. The company, however, has not officially confirmed these financial projections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
