The talks come as SpaceX is reported to be exploring an IPO at a valuation of up to $1.75 trillion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><br><strong>What Project Suncatcher Is About<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Google has discussed launch capacity with several providers, SpaceX among them. The two have a prior tie: Google invested $900 million in SpaceX in 2015. The initiative envisions orbital data centers powered by solar energy to supply AI computing capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">SpaceX acquired xAI in February 2026 and holds a computing agreement with Anthropic. A Google partnership would add to its AI infrastructure narrative ahead of a public listing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><br><strong>Why the Cost Math Remains Difficult<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">According to analysis by Andrew McCalip and others as reported by TechCrunch, the economics of orbital data centers still face significant challenges. <br><br>Elon Musk has claimed orbital data centers will be \u201cthe cheapest place to run AI compute within 36 months,\u201d but current estimates suggest otherwise. <br><br>Building a 1-gigawatt orbital facility is estimated at $42.4 billion \u2014 about three times a ground equivalent. When satellite procurement, launch, and maintenance costs are converted to a per-kW basis, costs run roughly $14,700 per kilowatt per year in orbit, versus $570 to $3,000 on the ground for terrestrial facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Reaching competitive economics requires reducing launch costs from roughly $3,600 per kilogram to around $200 \u2014 an 18-fold drop not expected before the 2030s. AI satellites also face a roughly five-year lifespan due to cosmic ray chip degradation and solar panel wear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><br><strong>The Real Driver: Ground Infrastructure Friction<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The push toward orbital computing reflects growing difficulty in securing land, power, and permits for large-scale data centers on the ground. Space avoids that friction. <br><br>Through xAI and its Anthropic agreement, SpaceX is positioning itself across both ground-based and orbital AI compute, giving it flexibility as the market evolves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><br><strong>Starship Is the Pivot Point<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The orbital data center case depends on Starship driving launch costs down at scale. Until that happens, orbital facilities remain expensive.
