U.S. luxury EV (electric vehicle) maker Lucid Motors has withdrawn its 2026 production guidance, citing a leadership transition and a company-wide cost-cutting effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Was Pulled<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In February, Lucid said it planned to build between 25,000 and 27,000 vehicles in 2026\u2014a meaningful step up from roughly 18,000 in 2025, but still far from the “hundreds of thousands” the company projected at its 2021 IPO (initial public offering).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CFO (chief financial officer) Taoufiq Boussaid told the company’s first-quarter earnings call that the guidance was being withdrawn as a “governance decision” while incoming CEO Silvio Napoli conducts a full review of the business. A complete updated outlook is expected at the next quarterly earnings call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

12% Layoffs and a 29-Day Production Halt<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several factors drove the decision. Months earlier, Lucid laid off about 12% of its workforce. The earnings report described the layoffs as costing roughly $40 million in the near term but generating up to $500 million in savings over the next several years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the first quarter, a problem with a seat supplier led to a 29-day production halt and a temporary stop-sale, which inflated inventory. The company now plans to keep production aligned with demand rather than building inventory ahead of orders. As Boussaid put it, “We are not constrained on capacity. We are constrained by our own discipline not to build inventory ahead of demand.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mid-Size EV and Robotaxi Plans Remain on Track<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the headline guidance was pulled, the strategic projects scheduled for the year stay on plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lucid still plans to start production of its first high-volume vehicle\u2014a sub-$50,000 mid-size platform\u2014within the year, and reaffirmed that the mid-size production ramp remains on track for 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company also confirmed that its robotaxi service with Uber and Nuro is expected to launch later this year. Road-ready autonomous Gravity SUVs are scheduled to begin production in the fourth quarter of 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Pause for the U.S. EV Market<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lucid’s move is symbolic of where the U.S. EV market sits today. Newer EV makers are struggling to balance capacity ramp-up with sales growth, and the cycle of inventory build-up, production cuts, and pulled guidance has hit nearly every non-Tesla EV player.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Napoli’s stated focus\u2014”sharper focus and consistent execution, particularly around simplification, prioritization, and speed”\u2014is straightforward in management terms. But it also signals a shift away from Lucid’s earlier high-end technology differentiation toward production discipline and demand-aligned manufacturing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
