At this year\u2019s CES, however, the emphasis had clearly shifted. Smart coffee machines controlled by smartphones. Toothbrushes that logged usage data. The show floor was overflowing with clever gadgets, and optimism was everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">But how did that story end?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Two or three years later\u2014around 2017\u2014most of those devices had disappeared from the market. Innovation alone was not enough. <strong>\u201cInteresting hardware\u201d proved insufficient as a sustainable business model.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Watching the Physical AI boom today raises an uncomfortable question:<br>Are we about to repeat the same cycle?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Simply adding AI to hardware does not guarantee success. Without deeper structural change, Physical AI risks becoming a replay of the IoT bubble. So what, then, separates the failed IoT gadgets of the past from the Physical AI systems that may actually survive?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"2-the-survival-requirement-the-end-of-finished-products\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. The Survival Requirement: The End of \u201cFinished Products\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The answer lies in what companies like Tesla and autonomous vehicle makers have quietly normalized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Traditional hardware\u2014and most IoT devices\u2014were most valuable at the moment of shipment. From that point forward, they only depreciated. Modern mobility products operate differently. Shipment is merely the beginning. Through continuous software updates, the same vehicle can evolve into something fundamentally new over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Software now overtakes hardware.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">This shift is the defining requirement for Physical AI and robotics. Simply building \u201cAI-enabled hardware\u201d will not be enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">To survive, Physical AI must:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Become smarter over time<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Evolve in how it is used<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Increase in value <em>after<\/em> purchase<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Hardware must no longer be treated as a finished product, but rather as <strong>a vessel for an evolving service<\/strong>. Whether companies can embrace this redefinition will determine whether Physical AI becomes a fleeting trend\u2014or the foundation of next-generation infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"3-what-the-venue-temperature-reveals-about-the-industry\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. What the Venue Temperature Reveals About the Industry<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Another revealing aspect of CES 2026 was the stark contrast between venues and company approaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>LVCC (Major Tech Players): Cautious and Searching<\/strong><br>Large technology firms appeared more restrained. CEO Jensen Huang not only delivered major announcements but also appeared at Lenovo\u2019s keynote at Sphere. His influence felt ubiquitous, signaling continued acceleration from last year\u2019s momentum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Venetian (Startups): Chaos and Intensity<\/strong><br>Meanwhile, the Venetian was packed to the point of congestion.
