These collections had been paused during the COVID-19 pandemic but are now set to restart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"%f0%9f%93%8a-43-million-americans-in-student-debt\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\ud83d\udcca 43 Million Americans in Student Debt<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">As of 2025, approximately <strong>43 million Americans hold federal student loans<\/strong>.<br><br>Among them, more than <strong>9.33 million borrowers (over 20%) owe more than $50,000<\/strong> in student debt, according to the New York Fed\u2019s Household Debt and Credit Report (Q4 2024).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"%f0%9f%92%a5-whats-happening-with-collections\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\ud83d\udca5 What\u2019s Happening with Collections?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The Department of Education has announced the following steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Collection notices will be sent in May 2025<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Wage garnishments and offsets from tax refunds and federal pensions will begin this summer<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"%f0%9f%94%8d-what-happened-to-loan-forgiveness\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\ud83d\udd0d What Happened to Loan Forgiveness?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">In 2022, the Biden administration attempted to forgive part of the student debt burden.<br><br>However, the <strong>Supreme Court ruled the measure unconstitutional<\/strong> in June 2023, leading to its cancellation.
