OpenAI-Backed Thrive Holdings Raises Over $2B at $12B Valuation
August 12, 2026

Thrive Holdings, a holding company that buys traditional businesses and rebuilds them around AI, announced on August 12, 2026 that it has raised more than $2 billion in new funding at a $12 billion valuation.
The round brought in D1 Capital Partners, Altimeter Capital, and SoftBank Group as new investors, alongside existing institutional partners.
The raise underscores how AI deployment — putting AI into everyday business operations — is becoming a business of its own.
A $2B-Plus Round That Lifts Total Funding Past $3 Billion
The company says the new capital brings Thrive Holdings’ total funding to more than $3 billion since inception. The firm says it owns and operates more than 70 businesses.
Part of the proceeds will fund a third platform focused on the built environment — the technical and regulatory work required to get infrastructure approved, built, certified, and kept in operation. PYMNTS, citing a report by The Information, said this was the first time Thrive Holdings accepted capital from investors beyond Thrive Capital’s existing institutional backers.
From Thrive Capital Spinout to 70-Plus Businesses in Accounting and IT
Thrive Holdings is a spinout of Thrive Capital, one of OpenAI’s major investors. In December 2025, OpenAI announced it had taken an ownership stake in the holding company, embedding its research, product, and engineering teams in portfolio businesses to accelerate AI adoption.
The company has built two pillars so far. TechCrunch reported that Current, its accounting arm, spans more than 50 firms and more than 2,000 professionals, while Shield, its IT services arm, has around 20 companies on its platform.
Thrive says Current’s tax agent, TaxAI, has processed more than 7,000 tax returns at 98% accuracy and cut tax preparation times at participating firms by over 30%. It also says Shield’s AI products have sped up help desk resolution times by 36x. These figures come from the company’s own disclosures; neither the announcement nor TechCrunch’s reporting presents external verification methods or results.
Why AI Deployment Itself Is Becoming a Business
The new funding lands amid a broader race to turn AI implementation into a standalone business. According to TechCrunch, OpenAI and Anthropic have each partnered with private equity firms and other investors to launch the OpenAI Deployment Company and Ode with Anthropic, billion-dollar ventures that embed engineers inside enterprises to deploy AI across business workflows.
Governments are moving in a similar direction: California struck a deal with Anthropic to make Claude available to state agencies.
Thrive Holdings differs in that it buys the businesses it transforms. Thrive Holdings says partner-firm owners keep meaningful equity in their businesses and continue to lead them.
What to Watch Next
Thrive Holdings has not disclosed which acquisition targets its third platform will pursue or which areas it will prioritize. According to TechCrunch, the company cited data centers, manufacturing, healthcare, power, water, and transportation as examples of the physical infrastructure the platform could serve.
The company’s performance metrics, such as TaxAI’s accuracy figures, come from its own disclosures.
